UBC Training Department Partnerships with School Boards
The United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) Training Department is proud to collaborate with school boards across Ontario and beyond to create meaningful pathways into the skilled trades for high school students. These partnerships are designed to promote early exposure to the carpentry and scaffolding trades, support workforce development, and ensure a steady pipeline of skilled, safety-conscious workers entering the construction industry.
Dual Credit and Youth Apprenticeship Programs
UBC Training Centres work closely with school boards to deliver Dual Credit and Youth Apprenticeship Programs. These initiatives allow high school students to earn credits toward both their high school diploma and apprenticeship certification. Students gain hands-on experience in carpentry, interior systems, floor covering, and scaffolding under the guidance of certified instructors at UBC facilities.
Industry-Recognized Health & Safety Certification.
We offer opportunities for high school students to attend our facilities to gain the most in-demand certifications in the construction industry. These programs are designed to equip students with practical, job-ready skills while reinforcing a strong understanding of workplace safety standards.
In-School Presentations and Career Fairs
UBC representatives regularly participate in school board career fairs, skilled trades expos, and in-class presentations. These engagements help raise awareness about the benefits of a career in the trades, the structure of apprenticeship programs, and the opportunities available through union membership.
March Break Camps
In partnership with local boards, UBC Training Centres host introductory trades camps during school breaks. These camps offer students a chance to explore carpentry in a safe, supportive environment, often leading to increased interest in pursuing a trade after graduation.
Teacher & Guidance Counsellor Engagement
UBC also provides professional development sessions for educators and guidance counsellors to ensure they have up-to-date information about apprenticeship pathways, union training standards, and labour market trends. This helps educators better support students considering a career in the skilled trades.
Skills Qualifying Events
UBC Training Centres proudly host Skills Qualifying Events in various provinces, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in carpentry and related trades. These competitions foster excellence, build confidence, and connect students with industry professionals.
Organizational Partnerships
UBC works with groups like the Ontario Council for Technology Education (OCTE) and The Educational Partnership Foundation (TEPF). We have run sector-partnered experiences with teachers in construction math and tool use for the OCTE. With TEPF, we have hosted numerous high school students for hands-on workshops through their skilled trades program.
Enhanced Construction Program
A hallmark of our school board partnerships is the Enhanced Construction Program, which allows a full class of high school students to attend a UBC Training Centre for an entire semester. This immersive experience provides students with in-depth exposure to the trades, hands-on training, and a clear pathway into apprenticeship opportunities.
