About This Program

Level 2 builds on foundational skills and prepares apprentices for more complex, commercial‑style work. Apprentices focus on advanced geometry, complex ceiling systems, specialized drywall applications, demountable partitions, raised‑access flooring, welding, and sound and thermal control. This level emphasizes precision, efficiency, and adherence to plans and specifications

Program Outline

Geometry Theory and Application

Advanced layout for arches, domes, curved walls, and vaulted ceilings
Application of geometry to complex construction features

Suspended Ceilings (Advanced)

Complex ceiling layouts (45°, coffered, linear systems)
Bulkheads, soffits, and advanced installation techniques

Drywall Partitions and Ceilings

Shaft wall systems and specialized drywall assemblies
Exterior finish boards, EIFS, sound control, and air‑barrier details

Demountable Partitions

Progressive and non‑progressive demountable wall systems
Pre‑finished panels, trims, sound insulation, and cleanup procedures

Raised‑Access Flooring

Materials, layout, and installation of access floor systems
Pedestals, panels, ramps, stairs, and handrails

Trade Calculations

Ratio, proportion, trigonometry, and advanced trade math
Application to stairs, roofs, and steel framing

Plan Reading (Advanced)

Computerized drawings and specifications
Engineered drawings, finish schedules, and change orders

Metal Cutting and Welding

Safe operation of SMAW and GMAW welding equipment
Basic welding techniques applied to trade requirements

Thermal and Sound Theory and Application

Insulation materials and installation methods
Air/vapour barriers and sound attenuation systems

Participant Supports

Employment Insurance (EI) while in training

Apprentices may be eligible for EI benefits during full‑time, in‑class technical training.

The Canada Apprentice Loan is a federal program that provides interest‑free financial support to eligible apprentices while they attend full‑time, in‑class technical training in a designated Red Seal trade.

Apprentices can borrow up to $4,000 per level of technical training, for a maximum of five levels.

The Apprenticeship Development Benefit is an Ontario government program that provides financial help to apprentices while they attend full‑time, in‑class technical training at an approved training provider.

It is designed to help cover basic living costs when apprentices are away from work for training.
Support may include assistance for:

Living expenses
Dependent care
Commuting, travel, or living away from home
Additional supports for apprentices with disabilities

Eligibilty

To be eligible to attend apprenticeship in‑class training in Ontario, an individual must be a registered apprentice with Skilled Trades Ontario, have a registered Training Agreement with an approved sponsor (such as an employer or group sponsor), and be working in a recognized Ontario apprenticeable trade. The apprentice must meet any trade‑specific prerequisites, including required education, on‑the‑job training hours, and completion of prior in‑class levels where applicable.
