About This Program

Level 1 introduces apprentices to the drywall, acoustic, and lathing trade. The focus is on safety, trade fundamentals, basic calculations, plan reading, and introductory installation skills. Apprentices develop hands‑on experience with suspended ceilings, steel‑stud partitions, drywall application, and residential steel‑stud construction, building the foundational skills required for job‑site work

Program Outline

Trade Knowledge and Safety Orientation

Trade history, terminology, and safety regulations
Tools of the trade and safe work practices
WHMIS, PPE, ladders, scaffolds, and material handling

Trade Calculations

Imperial and metric measurement
Geometry basics, area, volume, and percentage calculations
Practical math for construction applications

Plan Reading

Reading drawings, symbols, scales, and specifications
Floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, and basic material take‑offs

Computers

Basic computer skills for word processing and spreadsheets
Introduction to digital documentation used in construction

Suspended Ceiling Systems

Components, layout, and installation of basic suspended ceilings
Ceiling grids, hangers, tiles, bulkheads, and access panels

Partitions and Curtain Walls

Steel‑stud wall systems and curtain wall framing
Drywall types, installation techniques, and accessories
Basic application of acoustic and thermal materials

Residential Steel‑Stud Construction

Residential steel framing systems
Layout and installation of floors, walls, ceilings, and roofs

Participant Supports

Employment Insurance (EI) while in training

Apprentices may be eligible for EI benefits during full‑time, in‑class technical training.

The Canada Apprentice Loan is a federal program that provides interest‑free financial support to eligible apprentices while they attend full‑time, in‑class technical training in a designated Red Seal trade.

Apprentices can borrow up to $4,000 per level of technical training, for a maximum of five levels.

The Apprenticeship Development Benefit is an Ontario government program that provides financial help to apprentices while they attend full‑time, in‑class technical training at an approved training provider.

It is designed to help cover basic living costs when apprentices are away from work for training.
Support may include assistance for:

Living expenses
Dependent care
Commuting, travel, or living away from home
Additional supports for apprentices with disabilities

Eligibilty

To be eligible to attend apprenticeship in‑class training in Ontario, an individual must be a registered apprentice with Skilled Trades Ontario, have a registered Training Agreement with an approved sponsor (such as an employer or group sponsor), and be working in a recognized Ontario apprenticeable trade. The apprentice must meet any trade‑specific prerequisites, including required education, on‑the‑job training hours, and completion of prior in‑class levels where applicable.
